Four locations, one comprehensive billing solution

M-net

By 2025, all 165 company vehicles will be fully electric. To prepare for this, we have implemented a comprehensive charging solution with dynamic load management, including hardware and electricity billing—tailored to the needs of each location.

vision: Fully electric fleet by 2025
    company size: Around 600 employees
    fleet size: 165 fleet vehicles
    sites: Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, Kempten
user groups: Private electric cars, company and pool vehicles
circumstances: Rental property in Augsburg, consideration of building load including air conditioning and ventilation systems, partially limited performance at locations
initial situation

Four locations, one comprehensive billing solution

By 2025, the fleet of over 165 vehicles at the telecommunications provider M-net is planned to be fully electric. The company sought a comprehensive solution for the charging infrastructure of this future electric fleet across all four locations—Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, and Kempten—from a single source. This solution was to include not only the installation and operation but also the monitoring and support of the charging stations, as well as charging and energy management.

An equally comprehensive and convenient billing solution was also pursued for electric vehicles at company locations as well as for employees charging their company cars at home.

Challenge

E-mobility for all needs: How do we deal with diverse user requirements?

For service technicians’ vehicles, prioritizable DC chargers should be installed to ensure they can be recharged as quickly as possible and remain ready for use at all times. It was also essential that the dynamic load management takes into account the electricity consumption of the buildings’ air conditioning and ventilation systems, due to limited power supply capacity at some locations.

Another special aspect was that one of the sites, the branch in Augsburg, is owned by Mediengruppe Pressedruck. The forward-looking information provider was very open to the electrification project and took on the full electrification of the site as a joint project.

For us, this meant that the billing system had to distinguish between three different user groups—the company car drivers of Pressedruck, their employees with private electric cars, and the company car drivers of M-net.

"The human component in the collaboration with The Mobility House is especially noteworthy. It has significantly contributed to overcoming the many challenges along the way to implementing the charging infrastructure, challenges that we have grown through together. With The Mobility House, we have a partner by our side with whom we can master all future requirements."

Our solution

A centralized charging system that takes into account diverse user groups and building load.

At its four locations, M-net together with our experts has installed a total of 121 charging points. The distribution across the individual cities is as follows:

  • Munich: 50 AC charging points
  • Nuremberg: 6 AC charging points and 6 DC charging points with up to 50 kW
  • Augsburg: 51 AC charging points and 8 DC charging points with up to 150 kW
  • Kempten (planned): 4 DC charging points with up to 50 kW

At all locations, the intelligent charging and energy management system ChargePilot® is used to regulate loads. In addition to load management, which prioritizes DC chargers for the especially important service vehicles, the charging software also handles monitoring of the charging points as well as billing of the charging processes. All data from all locations is consolidated and viewable in the web-based dashboard of the charge&bill billing portal. Employees who charge company vehicles at home can accurately and conveniently bill the charging electricity to their employer M-net via the @home function.

Since 2021, M-net has been the first climate-neutral telecommunications provider in Germany, with the clear goal of further reducing the remaining CO2 emissions that must still be compensated. About two-thirds of these remaining emissions come from the company fleet. However, this will not last long: From 2025 onwards, only electric vehicles will be used as company, service, and pool vehicles. The installed charging infrastructure is already equipped for this task.

Achievements

Tailored charging infrastructure with flexibility for growth

M-net has received from us a future-proof and manufacturer-neutral complete solution for all four locations as well as for charging@home, which individually takes into account the different conditions and requirements. High grid expansion costs as well as expensive peak loads were avoided. There are still opportunities for further scaling: for example, separate charging points for guests are being considered.
